An unknown error appears when you activate SMART Notebook software

When you activate SMART Notebook 10 software, an error message appears stating, "Activation failed. Unknown error."

Cause
Solution

Delete the existing activation information stored in your computer, and then activate your software again. These procedures vary depending on your version of SMART Notebook software and your operating system.

Important

  • You must have administrative privileges to complete these procedures.
  • In the following examples, NB-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX is your product key.
  • If the error message appears after you follow these procedures, go to smarttech.com/nb10productkey/Default.aspx to get a new product key, and then repeat the procedures below.

SMART Notebook 10 SP2 or earlier

Windows computers

Caution: Be careful when you modify the Windows registry. If you modify it incorrectly, you could damage your operating system. Back up registry keys to a .reg file before you change them.

To delete the existing activation information

  1. Close SMART Notebook software, and then select Start > Run.
    The Run dialog box appears.
  2. Type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    The Registry Editor window appears.
  3. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SMART Technologies\License Information\Keys, and then delete the folder clash_notebook.
  4. Close the Registry Editor window and use one of the following procedures to activate SMART Notebook software.

To activate SMART Notebook software

  1. Click the SMART Board icon in the notification area, and then select Welcome to Notebook.
    The Welcome Center appears.
  2. Click the Help/Support tab.
  3. Click Activate Software.
    The SMART Software Activation dialog box appears.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

To activate SMART Notebook software by command line

Activate SMART Notebook software using the command line method for Windows operating systems by running the following command in a command window:

""C:\Program Files\Common Files\SMART Technologies\SMART Product Update\activationwizard.exe"" --suid clash_notebook --m=4 --a --pk NB-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Note: You can use your choice of server-based management software to push that command line on your network and globally activate SMART Notebook software.

Mac computers

Caution: Change only the .plist file shown in the procedure below. If you change a .plist file incorrectly, you might have to install the application again. Back up your .plist file before you change it.

Note: You require a .plist editor to perform the following procedure. If you don't have a .plist editor, you can download one at no cost from apple.com, or use the .plist editor from your Mac operating system software CD.

To delete the existing activation information

  1. Close SMART Notebook software, and then open a .plist editor.
  2. Select File > Open.
  3. Browse to Mac HD > Library > Preferences > com.smarttech.Registry.plist.
    If the file doesn't appear, browse to Mac HD > Users > Shared > Library > Preferences > com.smarttech.Registry.plist.
  4. Browse to Root > Software > SMART Technologies > License Information > Keys, and then delete the entry clash_notebook.
  5. Select File > Save.
  6. Close the .plist file and use one of the following procedures to activate SMART Notebook software.

To activate SMART Notebook software

  1. Click the SMART Board Tools icon in the Dock, and then select Welcome Center.
    The Welcome Center appears.
  2. Click the Help/Support tab.
  3. Click Activate Software.
    The SMART Software Activation dialog box appears.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

To activate SMART Notebook software by command line

Activate SMART Notebook software using the command line method for Mac operating system software by running the following command in a Terminal window:

sudo /Library/Application\ Support/SMART\ Technologies/activationwizard.app/Contents/MacOS/activationwizard --suid clash_notebook --m=4 --a --pk NB-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Note: You can use your choice of server-based management software to push that command line on your network and globally activate SMART Notebook software.

SMART Notebook 10 SP3 or later

Windows computers

To delete the existing activation information

  1. Open Windows Control Panel, and then double-click Folder Options.
  2. Select the View tab and, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
  3. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  4. Close SMART Notebook software, and then open Windows Explorer.
  5. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SMART Technologies (Windows XP operating system).
    OR
    Go to C:\ProgramData\SMART Technologies (Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems).
  6. Delete the following files (if they exist):
    • activation.dat
    • .mp.1.1.dat
    • .vp.1.2.dat

    Important

    • Deleting these files also removes your product key from your computer's memory. Record the product keys for all your SMART products before deleting these files.
    • Deleting these files affects all your SMART products' activations. You'll need to reactivate all your SMART products.
  7. Close Windows Explorer and use one of the following procedures to activate SMART Notebook software.

To activate SMART Notebook software

  1. Click the SMART Board icon in the notification area, and then select Welcome to Notebook.
    The Welcome Center appears.
  2. Click the Help/Support tab.
  3. Click Activate Software.
    The SMART Software Activation dialog box appears.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

To activate SMART Notebook software by command line

To delete the existing activation information

  1. Close SMART Notebook software, and then open Terminal.
  2. Type the following command, and then press RETURN:

    cd /Users/Shared/.config/SMART\ Technologies/

    Notes

    • This command is case sensitive.
    • You might need to enter your password after pressing RETURN.
  3. Delete the following files (if they exist):
    • sudo rm activation.dat
    • sudo rm .mp.1.1.dat
    • sudo rm .vp.1.2.dat

    Important

    • Deleting these files also deletes your product key from your computer's memory. Record the product keys for all your SMART products before deleting these files.
    • Deleting these files affects all your SMART products' activations. You'll need to reactivate all your SMART products.
  4. Close Terminal and use one of the following procedures to activate SMART Notebook software.

To activate SMART Notebook software

  1. Click the SMART Board Tools icon in the Dock, and then select Welcome Center.
